Big Picture Learning at Bulli High School

Bulli High School is excited to introduce Big Picture Learning, a personalised approach to education that empowers students to learn through their interests, develop independence and take an active role in shaping their future.

Our first Big Picture cohort will launch in 2027 for students in Years 9 and 10.

Big Picture Learning offers a different way of organising high school. Students learn in small groups called Advisories, working closely with a dedicated Advisory teacher who guides and supports their learning. Rather than following a traditional timetable of multiple subjects, students develop personalised learning plans that connect their interests, strengths and goals to the broader curriculum.

Through personal interest projects, community action, field trips and real-world learning experiences, students develop important skills in research, communication, problem-solving, collaboration and time management. A key feature of the program is a weekly internship, where students learn alongside an expert mentor in a workplace, business, organisation or community setting that interests them.

Students are supported to become confident, independent learners who understand how to apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts. Their learning is celebrated through regular exhibitions, where students share their achievements, projects and personal growth with families, teachers and the wider community.

Big Picture Learning is built on strong relationships, student voice and the belief that every young person has unique strengths and potential. It provides opportunities for students to take ownership of their learning while developing the skills, knowledge and confidence needed for life beyond school.
