Science
A Community of Learners, A World of Opportunities
Science at our school opens doors to curiosity, discovery, and innovation. As a community of learners, students are encouraged to explore the world around them, ask questions, and develop the skills they need to solve real-world problems. With hands-on investigations, collaborative learning, and opportunities to think critically and creatively, our science program inspires students to become confident and curious explorers of the natural world.
Years 7 to 10 Science
In Years 7 to 10, science provides a structured yet exciting way for students to inquire about the world. Through practical experiments, observation, and analysis, students learn to gather evidence, test ideas, and develop solutions to challenges that impact their lives and communities. The curriculum places strong emphasis on the skills of working scientifically—including problem-solving, critical thinking, and creative reasoning—equipping students not only for further study in science but also for life beyond the classroom.
In Years 9 and 10, students can elect to study Marine Studies. This engaging subject offers an exciting opportunity to explore Australia’s incredible marine environments while developing practical skills, scientific knowledge, and real-world understanding. It is ideal for students who love the ocean, enjoy hands-on learning, and want to discover the science behind our coastal ecosystems.
Throughout the course, students participate in a range of practical activities, including snorkelling, water safety, sustainable fishing practices, seafood preparation, rod building, and fieldwork in local marine environments.
A highlight of Marine Studies is the annual excursion to Cairns, where students have the unique opportunity to explore one of the most extraordinary marine environments on Earth—the Great Barrier Reef.
Students engage with a wide range of topics, from biology and chemistry to physics and earth & marine sciences, discovering how scientific knowledge is developed and applied. By exploring both the theoretical and practical sides of science, students gain the confidence to ask questions, make informed decisions, and see the possibilities for innovation in a rapidly changing world.
Stage 6 Courses
In Years 11 and 12, students can choose from different science disciplines, including:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Earth and Environmental Science
- Investigating Science
- Physics
- Marine Studies
In Year 12, students who are studying at least one other science subject may also choose to study Science Extension.
