Course Description

In the Year 11 and HSC courses, students will study the concepts of music through the learning experiences of performance, composition, musicology and aural within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres.

Main Topics Covered

  • Students study one Mandatory Topic covering a range of content and one Additional Topic in each year of the course.
  • In the Year 11 course, the Mandatory Topic is Music 1600–1900.
  • In the HSC course, the Mandatory Topic is Music of the Last 25 Years (Australian focus).

Particular Course Requirements

In addition to core studies in performance, composition, musicology and aural, students nominate one elective study in Performance, Composition or Musicology. Students selecting Composition or Musicology electives will be required to compile a portfolio of work as part of the process of preparing a submitted work. The portfolio may be requested by the Board of Studies to validate authorship of the submitted work.

All students will be required to develop a composition portfolio for the core composition.

Course Description

In the Year 11 and HSC courses, students will study the concepts of music (Pitch, Duration, Structure, Tone Colour, Texture and Dynamics and Expressive Techniques) through the learning experiences of performance, composition, musicology and aural within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres.

Main Topics Covered

Students study three topics in each year of the course. Topics are chosen from a list of 21, which covers a range of styles, periods and genres.

Particular Course Requirements

HSC course

In addition to core studies in performance, composition, musicology and aural, students select three electives from any combination of performance, composition and musicology. These electives must represent three different topics studied in the course.

Students selecting Composition electives will be required to compile a portfolio of work as part of the process of preparing a submitted work. The portfolio may be requested by the Board of Studies to validate authorship of the submitted work.

Elective Based

The HSC Course in Music 1 is primarily elective based, meaning individuals may choose where their strengths lie in the course and design their examinations to best suit their abilities. This allows students to focus on styles and topics which they enjoy and can present assessment task and examination material centering on their choice of learning experiences. (Performance, Composition or Analysis)

Music Year 7 & 8 ( Stage 4) Mandatory

Music Year 9 & 10. (Stage 5) Elective

The mandatory course provides a foundation in Music for all students.

The elective course will build sequentially from the mandatory course and is designed for students in Years 7–10 who wish to extend their musical experiences and learning. The knowledge, understanding and skills gained in the course provide a firm foundation for the study of Music in Stage 6.

The Mandatory course is based on 100 indicative hours of classroom music. The Elective course can be implemented as either a 100-hour or 200-hour course for the award of a School Certificate.

In the Music Mandatory and Elective courses, students will study:

  • the concepts of music
  • through the learning experiences of performing, composing and listening
  • within the context of a range of styles, periods and genres.

Contexts

The mandatory course requires students to study a broad range of contexts, including art music.

The elective course requires students to study one compulsory topic – Australian Music – as well as a number of other topics from two defined groups that aim to provide depth and breadth of musical study.
