‘Human Society in its Environment'
The HSIE faculty at Bulli High School delivers a dynamic and an engaging curriculum that makes up the diverse framework that is HSIE. Historically, HSIE faculties have emerged across NSW in most schools as an amalgamation of what were previously separate History and Social Science faculties. The 2 disciplines are very much linked and in our increasingly globalised and post-modern world, the humanities are more important than ever. Each year, Bulli High School awards the Peter Webber Medal for excellence in Humanities. Mr Peter Webber was a much respected humanities teacher in our community and we honour his memory each year by recognising students who excel and represent the values of our courses.
The significance of History in the curriculum was highlighted by its inclusion as one of the four First Phase subjects in the new National Curriculum, together with English, Maths and Science. 2015 marks the second stage of the implementation of the new curriculum with students throughout Years 7-10 now studying the Board of Studies syllabus, based on the national curriculum produced by ACARA. It is a challenging but rewarding course with a more global emphasis. Students study topics as diverse as Ancient Aboriginal Australia to the French Revolution and the Holocaust in Year 10. Key historical skills such as ‘contestability' are explored through controversies such as the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII.
As a HSIE faculty, it is important that we have a good balance of trained historians and geographers. As such, our faculty boasts highly experienced Geographers who aim to deliver the curriculum with relevance and engagement. With the advantage of being located in the beautiful natural surrounds of the Bulli coast line, students have the opportunity to get out into the field and study coastal management, wave formation and the natural environment. Senior Geography students have had the opportunity to go the Great Barrier Reef as part of their Preliminary course, while locally, there are regular field work trips to the Minnamurra Rainforest.
The senior curriculum offers great choice and highly experienced teachers in their field, including experienced HSC markers in Legal Studies, Geography and Modern History. Please click on the senior humanities link to find out more about these subjects.
